SENSATION AT FIRE,

A HEROIC RESCUE,

MELBOURNE, Sunday,

Fire Officer Latnan was standing perilously on the roof of a blazing factory at Moorgate yesterday evening when the tiles fell in. Latnan dropped seventy feet down a lift shaft, through which the flames were roaring, for four floors. lie crashed through the charred lift into the basement.

Fireman Kelly donned a gas-mask respirator and descended by means of a rope. He tied the rope to Latnan, who was hauled up. The rope was thrown back to Kelly, who tied himself to it before collapsing,and was hauled up unconscious. Latnan is in a serious condition in hospital. The fire illuminated the whole city area and endangered many factories.
