Tliero was no return from the Okarito dredge last week. The dredging hours during the week were only 49 on account of a stoppage for overhaul during the early part of the week. A Wellington telegram states that an agreement has been reached between the Shipowners’ Federation and the Federated Cooks’ and Stewards’ Union of New Zealand whereby an increase of 5 per cent, has been agreed upon for all coastal companies’ steamers from Ist December, 1934. The conditions of employment remain the same as prior to the old award, dated Ist December, 1931.

With the object of discussing amalgamation proposals, delegates from the Wellington, Feilding, Wanganui, Waimarintf, Taranaki, and Hawke’s Bay Acclimatisation Societies met in Palmerston North on Saturday. Proceedings were in committee, but it was announced later that four different proposals were considered, and these are to be deliberated upon further at a later date.

The Masterton Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club will hold its weekly meeting in the Dixon Street Baths to-night at 7.30 o’clock when the usual events will be decided, including the house relay race. In addition, a feature of the evening will be the 100 yards club championship. A largo attendance of the public is expected. After the events are decided the baths will be open to the public for mixed bathing.

Fruitgrowers in the Alexandra district (says the “Otago Daily Times”) have reason to be well satisfied with the success which attended the chilling of fruit this season. The rabbit freezing works at Alexandra proved admirably adapted to the purposes of chilling and thousands of cases of peaches, apricots, nectarines and greengages have been handled successfully. The result is that great losses were saved and the season for stone fruits has been extended.

“It is very gratifying to see the increase, Mr Tomlinson,” said the chairman of the Wairarapa .Secondary Education Board, Mr L. J. Taylor, at last night’s meeting of the board, referring to the roll number at the Wairarapa High School. Tho Principal of the School, Mr H. B. Tomlinson, reported an opening roll of 313 (boys 179, girls 134), an increase of 37 on last year. Old pupils totalling 187 (boys 117, girls 70), returned and the new* pupils enrolled totalled 126 (boys 62, girls 64). The increase in the roll number necessitated the appointment of another teacher. In the meantime Miss Eves, M.Sc., was acting as temporary assistant. The number of boarders remained the same, 16, five having left and five having enrolled. The Carterton Fire Brigade received a call at 2.30 yesterday afternoon, sparks from the mail train having set fire to the grass on the property of Mr T. Ray, Clareville. No serious damage was done, but the fire covered a wide area before being extinguished.

At a meeting of the committee of the Red Star Football Club Jubilee reunion held at the residence of Mr E. J. Wing last night, various sub-com-mittees were elected, and speakers appointed in connection with the annual re-union on Saturday, 20th April. It was reported that interest in the club’s jubilee was increasing and that it was expected that there would bo a very largo attendance at all the functions.

At the Carterton green yesterday afternoon a rink from the Fctono Central Bowling Club played a friendly game with a Carterton rink, Carterton winning 22/12. The teams were: —Petone—J. Campbell, E. Caley, 11. Churchill, W. Urwin (s). Carterton—Page, E. Hawker, A. Stubbs, G. ITughan (s). The visitors thanked the Carterton bowlers for a pleasant afternoon and extended a hearty invitation to them to pay a reurn visit at an early date. The fortnightly meeting of the Foresters’ Lodge was held on Monday night when a large attendance of members were present, presided over by C.R. Bro. C. A. Leigh. The sick visitors reported that the members on the sick list were progressing favourably. Bro. J. Barr, P.C.R., reported on the proceedings of the annual meeting and also congratulated the lodge on behalf of the district executive on the progress it has made. The secretary reported that a hospital scheme had been formed and placed full particulars before the members, and asked all members present to form themselves into a. working bee to induce other members to join up as soon as possible. Members wishing to join can leave their names with Bro. W. L. Sharman or the secretary when full information will be given in connection with the scheme. It is hoped that every member will avail himself of- the ’ opportunity. One friend was initiated into the Order by C.R. Bro. C. A. Leigh, assisted by I.P.C.R. Bro. G. G. Jackson Final arrangements were made in connection with the annual visit to Court Marquis of Normandy (Carterton) on Wednesday, 20th Cars will leave the lodge room at 7.15 p.m. The lodge also intends to visit Court Pioneer on 30th March, and all members wishing to make the trip are reciuested to hand in their names early. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £34/16/8 wore passed for payment.
