Mr H. H. Cornish, the Solicitor-Gen-eral, has been appointed ailing’s Counsel. /Jr X' Mr W. H. Maitland, oF*Hasting£, was on a visit to Masterton at the week-end.

The engagement is announced of Miss D. Trass, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs S. Trass, Mt. Bruce, to Mr Roy Clark, third son of Mr and Mrs C. Clark, Masterton. Miss E. McFadden, who has recently been in charge of Pelorus Bridge school, in the Marlborough district, has been appointed sole teacher at the Makomako school.

The extraordinary sympathy aroused through the death of Mr S. W. Green (pilot) and Mr J. A. Austin in the air crash in the Pouakai Ranges on Thursday was exemplified at the funerals at *New Plymouth yesterd^. Both were popular young men. jlpeortege of ears half a mile long followed the hearse conveying the body of Mr Green to the Cemetery. ■ Mr Austin’s funeral was of a more private nature.

The following officials have . been elected to act at the next race meeting of the Carterton Racing Club: —Hon. judge, .Mr J. W. Card; lion, clerks of scales, Messrs W. C. Deller and R. G. Kemble; hon. timekeeper, Mr E. J. Matson; hon. surgeons, DrsHL N. Campbell, W.-J. C. Wells Young; hon. veterinary surgeon, Mr S. Fletcher; starter, Mr H. E. Connop; judicial committee, Messrs W. Howard Booth, L. H. Smart and A. C. Tucker.

Cabled advice has been received from London of the death of Mr A. M. Mitcliison, chairman of the Waihi Gold Mining Co., at the age of about 83 years (states a Press Association message from Auckland). He was elected director in 1894, and became chairman in 1905. He was for many years a director of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, and also on the London board of the New Zealand Insurance Co.

The death occurred on Saturday evening of Mr Waleot Wood, pd 70 years, a retired merchant and ranpany director, reports a Christchurch Press Association telegram. He was a director of Wood Brothers, merchants, and of New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd. Mr Wood took no part in public affairs but was interested in sport. He mar-, ried in 1893 the second daughter of Sir Henry Brett. 1 - His two sons are Mr Brett Wood, who is farming at Amberley and Mr Ivan Wood, solicitor, of Christchurch.

Mr James Watson, Wairarapa Pro* vineial Secretary, is to attend a ference of provincial secretaries of the Farmers’ Union to be held in Wellington next month. Proposals, with a view to evolving a universal scheme of organisation for the Dominion, are to be discussed at the conference.

The death has occurred at Half Moon Bay of Mr Adam Adamson, widely known in the Dominion as. the Ambergris King, owing to his activities in searching for ambergris in theirfarback beaches of Stewart Island, elites a Press Association message frOnlMnvercargill. Mr Adamson had a fine record, and held several medals for bravery.

The death occurred in yesterday morning, after an of some weeks, of Mr Daniel Matheson, a resident of the Upper Plain. Born at Berwick, Taieri Plain, Otago, 64 years ago, the late Mr Matheson had resided in Masterton for about 40 years. He was well known among members of the farming, community and dealers in stock and was highly respected by all who knew him. For many years he had a small farm on the Upper Plain and dealt extensively .with stock. He is survived by a sister, Miss Bessie Matheson and three brothers. in the South Island. The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving Mr G. Hyde’s Chapel, Church Street, at 2 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery. J
