BRADBURY CUP. RETAINED BY MASTERTON. Decided superiority both individually and as a team gave the Masterton Club a win in the second of this year’s races for the Bradbury Cup by a sufficient margin to enable them to retain the Cup for another season. Faced with a deficit of twelve points from the first of this season’s races the Masterton Club teamed exceptionally well to defeat Kiatere by the handsome margin of 35 points on the day, making a win on the aggregate points of the two races by 23.
A large field comprised of runners of both clubs faced the starter, Mr W. Pointon, who got them away to a good start. Before the Oval had been crossed Quale had raced into the lead, travelling at a hundred yards bat. He was not left long in command however and by the time the stock bridge on the Colombo Road was reached L. Hack (M) had assumed the lead from Quale (M) and C. Talbot (M), who was followed by a Kiatere trio consisting of MacDonald, A. and W. Burns. Racing across the paddocks by the Ruamalianga River many changes took place among the leading runners who were still travelling at a terrific pace, and when Colombo Road was again reached C. Talbot had taken charge from MacDonald (K), A. Burns (K) and Quale (M) in that order. After a slight gap Cresswell (M) passed with W. and Jim Burns (Iv) trailing him a
few yards ahead of Mulvey (M). On reaching the Park at the completion of the first lap little change had been made in the leading positions, C. Talbot holding a twenty yar.ds advantage over W. McDonald 'who was followed by Quale, A. Burns and Cresswell in that order. Masterton from now onwards began a great combined effort and many groups of their men were noticed pushing through several places. On reaching Colombo Road after crossing the paddocks for the second time Talbot was still in the lead but he had purposely slowed his pace down considerably to enable his team-mate
Quale to overtake him. MacDonald had fallen back to third place about fifty yards behind Quale, 150 yards further back. A. Burns was hanging on gamely although obviously distressed, but holding a decided advantage over Cresswell who had been joined by Masterton’s crack novice D. Talbot. W. Burns (K) was running with these two runners a slight distance ahead of Reilly (M), McKay (M), Jim Burns (K), Hack and Mulvey (M). Over the final mile Talbot hung back with Quale and helped him along, these two men taking first and second places for Masterton about fifty yards ahead of W. MacDonald (K). A. Burns (K) took fourth place but from now on Masterton were not to be denied taking from fifth to ninth places inclusively, W. and J. Burns (K) having to succumb to the harrassing they received at the hands 1 of a contingent of Masterton men consisting of D. TalbotCresswell, Mulvey and Reilly, finishing 10th and lltli respectively. Masterton continued to run well to keep the remaining Kiatere men back to loth and 21st places. Rutherfurd, who was the last of Kiatere’s team to finish, ran well below his usual form.
