Y.M.C.A.

MEETING OF DIRECTORS. Tlie president, Mr H. M. Peacock, presided at last night’s meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors. In his report for Jund, the general secretary, Mr A. E. Bate, stated that the statistics of the association showed satisfactory increases in practically all the activities’ section of the programme. In the Junior Department it was reported that more boys were receiving character training, and they were showing more enthusiasm than over before. All the regular senior activities continued to function as usual, including the two weekly matches for the Biniards Cup, the Optimist Club, the Esperanto Club and the Winter Sports Club. The Sunday afternoon meeting was also being maintained. A novelty band had been formed to assist in connection with the forthcoming carnival, and good progress was being made. The programme in the Junior Department had progressed a further stage, and a good number of the boys were engaged in the second set of tests, comprising the four square character building programme. The attendance of boys engaged in club activities was 238 for June. The organisation known as the Knights of St. James was also interesting a number of the hew boys, and was accomplishing good work in checking the swearing habit among boys. There had been practically no demand for boys for employment in June, but the position did not appear to be .very serious, as the number registered as not at school and seeking positions only amounted to eight. The gymnasium figures and activities were very encouraging. The roll numbered 184—19 more than in 1933, and the attendances totalled 590, as compared with 535. On the hockey field the A team was leading in the competitions, and had come through to the final in the five-a-side tournament. The usual forms of service had been given to the community during the month. These included the supervision of juvenile delinquents, collect/ing of books for the relief camps, and supervising Pitman’s shorthand examination at. the Technical School.

The usual routine business was discussed, and various matters pertaining to the Queen Carnival received consideration. The general secretary reported progress in respect to the four queens, and it was announced that a meeting of the central committee representing the four queens was to be held this morning. Messrs Campbell and Bate were appointed to act as delegates, pro tern, to that committee. In view of the necessity for keeping in close touch with things during the carnival, it was agreed to have a special meeting of the board every Thursday, at 5 p.m.
