BOXING

TITLE REGAINED. INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. Ray Nicol (Ohai) regained the heavyweight boxing title of New Zealand, which he forfeited recently owing to an arm injury, when he defeated Maurice Strickland (Wellington), on points this evening before a crowded house. Nicol’s weight was 12st. 71b., and Strickland’s 12st. 121 b. Nicol made his opponent miss a good deal by clever ducking. He also by superior work at close range. Strickland did not seem to be happy against the tactics adopted by Nicol. Strickland was anxious to win by a knockout, but though ho connected with head punches on several occasions, he at no time had Nicol at his mercy, as was the case when they previously met. Nicol was clearly ahead on points. — (P.A.)
