CENTENARY RACE “PROHIBITED IMPORT.” Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, Wednesday. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s Lockheed Altair monoplane is now in a hangar at Mascot as a “prohibited import” until a certificate of airworthiness is granted. Also, the name ‘ ‘ Anzac ’ ’ must be eliminated as the Government regards Anzac as sacred to the people, and hopes that Sir Charles will not press his clainT' to use that name.
Sir Charles lias already had the name painted out, and is looking round for another.
SMITHY’S PLANE BARRED. FOR SEVERAL REASONS. (Received Thursday, 10.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Smithy was told that he could not fly Ms Lockheed plane, the engine of which has been sfaled. Categorically 'Smithy has, firstly, failed to satisfy tlie Customs authorities; secondly, failed to secure a certificate from an American Chamber of Commerce; thirdly, lie landed a foreign machine that does not comply with the requirements of the International Convention of Air Navigation. NEW RACE SUGGESTED. PERTH TO MELBOURNE. FREMANTLE, Wednesday. Sir John Kirwan, President of the Legislative Council, who has just returned from England, makes a suggestion for an air race from Perth to Melbourne in connection with the centenary of Victoria, in which tlie majority of visiting airmen would be likely to compete. It is understood that the matter is being taken up by the Festival Week Committee in Sydney, with the idea of furthering the suggestion and having the race terminal at Sydney.
