REICHSTAG FIRE
CONDUCT OF TRIAL. LAWYERS’ PROTEST. BERLIN, Friday. At the resumption of the Reichstag fire trial, five American, Bulgarian and French lawyers attending the trial protested to the president of the court against the exclusion of Dimitroff. It was emphasised that Popoff and Taneff understood little or no German, while the proceedings, strangely, were not translated, and none of the foreign defendants was represented by a lawyer of his own choosing. Consequently, Dimitroff was both defendant and lawvcr, and his lack of knowledge ot German procedure brought him into conflict with the court. Dimitroff’s exclusion, it was contended, meant that lie did not recene a fair trial. If the Bulgarians were found guilty, it. would be impossible to convince the world of the objectivity and impartiality of German justice. REBUFF FOR PROSECUTION. ("Received Saturday, 9.50 a.m.) LEIPZIG, Friday. The prosecution suffered a rebuff when the arresting policeman denied that lie found a Communist membership card or proclamation card when he searched Van Der Lubbe. . . ... The Public Prosecutor insisted tnat the proclamation was found, but the constable remained unshaken.
