FALSE PRETENCES

ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY. OAMARU, Tuesday. At the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, Cicely King pleaded guilty to having attempted to obtain £25 5s from the National Insurance Company by a false pretence. The evidence disclosed that furniture was held under a hire purchase agreement, but the defendant made a declaration that no other person had an interest in the furniture, later admitting that certain articles had been sold before a fire destroyed her house and its contents. In the assessor’s list the furniture was valued at £259 and there was an insurance of £2OO. As a result of Mrs King’s action, she lost all the insurance. - The Magistrate, Mr Bundle, said Mrs King had acted in a very foolish way. He was unable to think the case was one calling for imprisonment. Mrs King elected to be dealt -with summarily and was convicted and admitted to probation for twelve months and ordered to pay the expenses of the prosecution, £6/18/9. —(P.A.)
