HARRIERS
KIATERE CLUB. 4f> ’ (Notes by '‘Observer.’’) By' including every senior member except one, Kiatere entered a full team in each grade in the Wellington Provincial Oiiampionships last Saturday, and every man did his best and completed the course. The A team, in finishing seventh out of eleven teams, put up a very creditable performance. S. L; Rutherfurd ran a great race and definitely confirmed his title to the Club Championship by being the first Wairarapa man to finish, his time being 38 minutes. He and Jas. Burns, who was only 35 seconds behind him, had both had previous experience in A grade running, which probably stood them in good stead. It is good to see Jim Burns gradually coming back to his old form. W. McDonald could not get going in the first lap, probably as a result of the journey over the Hill, but he came away in great style in the second lap to be the fourth club man
to finish. Alex Burns was disappointing, but u'filike the former three he was new to the course. He helped Ms club considerably by being the third club man to finish. W. Burns did not seem to have travelled well and once more lost a shoe. This is becoming quite a habit of which he must take pains to break himself. J. L. Burns stuck gamely to his hopeless task and put up a thrilling finish with C.Y.M.’s second man beating him by inches. With the exception of J. Carter, nearing the veteran mark, the B team
were all first year novices with only
one previous inter-club race, so naturally could not be expected to shine amongst so many experienced men. Even the novices of other clubs had had far more inter-club experience. Though last, they were not disgraced and finished as a team which one team failed to do. J. Carter, who captained the B team, ran his best race this season to lead his team home. He seemed to be troubled somewhat in the first lap but strode out well over the latter stages. J. Ryder, who was erroneously reported as being the last club man to finish, filled second position in the team, but being unused to such crowded conditions, got rather left in the first lap, but came away exceptionally well in the second to pass all his team mates with the exception of Carter, thus being the first novice to finish. O. Gaskin went off well but did not seem to like the bog. However, he hung on to finish third in his team. F. Harrison ran his best race to date. He is coming on fast and should prove very useful next season. A. G. Laing was not suited by the heavy going; he has failed to realise the promise shown by him in the novices ’ race*. L. Fitzgerald suffered from lack of sleep the previous night and also from the novelty of his surroundings. The A grade race was a triumph for the veterans, very, few young runners being prominent. Since the days of R. A. Rose, the Wairarapa seems unable to produce an outstanding runner. I believe that the Kiatere Club’s i policy of catching them young and taking pains to train and help them on by easy stages will provide a solution to this problem.
On the whole the members found the outing very enjoyable as well as beneficial and will all be keen to get into the teams again next year.
