INSTRUMENTAL GROUP. A most 'enjoyable evening of mixed items was held by the Instrumental Grpup of the British Mnsic Society at the residence of ( Mrs H. E. Pither, Lansdowne, on Wednesday. Mr H. B. Massey opened the programme with two piano solos, Automne (Cliaminade) and Valse (Sibiluis). Mr Candy gave an interesting talk on wood-wind instruments, and played an illustrative clarinet solo. A delightful violin solo was played by Mrs Wilbur Davies. The novelties of the evening were selections played on pipes, a quintet, “ Believe me, if all Those Endearing Young Charms,” and a duet with piano, Nocturne (Denza). These were arranged by Mr Candy. Miss E„ Donald played ‘“Golliwog’s Cake Walk” (Debussy).
The vocalist for the evening was Mr S. Gilding, who sang two delightful numbers, “Korisande” and “The Potter’s Song. ’ ’ Miss M. Holmwood’s rendering of Ravel’s “Ondive” was very much appreciated. As an encore Miss Holmwood played “Minstrel” (Debussy).
The subject of the talk given by Mr R. J. Young was Brass Instruments.” Mr Robins played Impromptu (Schubert). trio —Mrs Davies, violin; Miss I. Donald, ’cello; and Miss C. Donald, piano—played Moscowski’s ‘'‘Melodie” very charmingly. At the conclusion Mr H. B. Massey expressed regret that two of the members, Mrs Black and Mr Robins, were leaving Masterton. A vote of thanks was passed to the hostess, Mrs Pither, and to the performers. It was announced that the next meeting would be a Beethoven evening.
