MASTERTON RACING CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT. “Although we made a profit on the spring meeting,” states the annual report of the Masterton Racing Club, “we were not so fortunate with the autumn meeting, which showed a loss ’ of £389/3/5. There were two contributing factors to account for this loss, one being that we .unfortunately clashed with the South Wairarapa trotting meeting which was held at the Hutt Park on the Saturday, being the second day of our autumn meeting, and the other was due to the fact that the Rangitikei Racing Club was allowed to race two days before our meeting, the result being that all the Awapuni horses went to this meeting, and we did not receive one nomination from Palmerston North. After writing off depreciation amounting to £45/15/3, the year’s working showed a loss of £519/7/1. The following dates have been allotted to us for the ensuing year: Spring meeting, 14th October, 1933; Autumn meeting, Friday and Saturday, 13tli and 14th April, 1934. Nominations for the offices of president, vice-presidents (2) and stewards (8) not being in excess of the number required, a ballot will not be necessary, and the members nominated will be duly elected at the annual general meeting. Mr -William Cooper has been nominated for the office of president, Messrs C. J. Bennett and Robert Cooper as vice-presidents, and the following have been nominated for “the eight vacancies for stewards: Messrs H. P. Hugo, D. M. Montgomery, 11. Morrison, J. H. Payton, F. B. Vallance, Walter Cameron, J. T. Jameson, N. G. F. Whiteman, the last three being new stewards. All the buildings and property of the club have been well maintained and the track is in good order. The folloAving notice of motion Avill come up for discussion at the annual general meeting: ‘That Rule 12 be amended as folloAVs: The annual subscription for members shall be £l, payable on the first day of August

in each year or within fourteen days after election.’ If the motion is carried at the annual meeting it will mean that the annual subscription will be reduced from £2 to £1 per annum, and it is hoped that the reduction will induce members to retain their membership, and that those members who have resigned during the last twelve months will again join up. It is with regret that the deaths of four prominent members of the club during the year are recorded: —Messrs C. F. Vallance, R. 0. Smith, W. E. Bidwill, 0.8. E., and William Cameron. By the death of Mr C. F. Vallance, who was president of the club for over 30 years, the club has sustained a severe loss. As president, his help and advice was of great assistance to the stewards. At all times he was ever ready to help the club when in financial difficulties, and he was responsible for the erection of the members’ stand, which has been so much appreciated by members. Mr R.

0. Smith was a steward of the club for a number of years and rendered faithful services in that capacity. Messrs W. E. Bidwill, 0.8. E., and William Cameron were both very old members of the club. For and on behalf of the stewards, W. Cooper, vice-president.”
