COSY THEATRE. “FAST LIFE.” One hundred miles per hour speedboat racing, the world’s most thrilling sport, is shown in “Fast Life,” the breath-taking action picture featuring William Haines, which is to be shown again at the -Cosy this evening. No effort has been spared to bring the roaring .realism of boat racing to the screen. The camera, it is stated, was evidently mounted on a craft following so close to the speeding racers that the results obtain startling -effects in reproduction. William Haines ' continues with the “wise-cracking” that has marked his work in previous pictures, with a new restrained performance in dramatic scenes that shows his real -acting ability. Cliff Edwards is uproariously funny in his characterisaof Bumpy, the comedy mechanic who complicates matters for Haines. Madge Evans is said to be perfectly east as the charming Shirley, who provides lively romantic interest for Haines during his attempts to establish his new racing boat in international competition. 'Conrad Nagel, Arthur Byron, Wauburton -Gamble and others are a strong supporting cast. Seats may be reserved at Perry’s, ’phone 2496.
THE REGENT. 11 THE CALENDAR.” "The Calendar” is to be shown finally at the Regent Theatre to-night. Reserves at Perry’s, ’phone 2498. "SMILIN’ THROUGH.” With Norma Shearer as its star, and one of the most brilliant supporting easts yet assembled on the speaking screen, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s splendid production, of * "Smilin’ Through” will open at the Regent Theatre to-morrow. Miss Shearer in the feminine lead follows in the footsteps of Jane Cowl, who achieved one of her greatest successes in the recordbreaking stage run of the play from which the screen production was adapted. Opposite her is Frederic March, borrowed from Paramount to play the dual role of Jeremy 'Wayne in the midVictorian sequences of the story, * and Kenneth Wayne, his son, in the modern scenes. Leslie Howard and O. P. Heggie, who left the screen to fulfil stage engagements during the past season, were brought back to Hollywood to add further lustre to Miss Shearer’s cast. Both these distinguished players have appeared previously with the star. The cast also includes Ralph Forbes, Beryl Mercer, David Torrence, Margaret Seddon and Forrester Harvey, under the direction of Sidney Franklin, who produced "Private Lives.” ".Smilin’ Through” is the story of an old man who seeks to shed the relentless bitterness of his blighted romance on a pair of young lovers. The colourful background provides a contrast bejtween the England of 1868 and of modern days. Seats may be reserved at Perry’s, ’phone 2496.
