WAIRARAPA FRESIAN

SOLD TO VICTORIAN BREEDER. ‘The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. have sold, on behalf of Mr Knutson, of d>ala fie Id, Wairarapa, the 2-year-old pedigree Friesian bull, Turepo Prince Domino, to Mr I. Padgett, of Werribee, Victoria, and this bull was shipped to his home across the Tasman on 2nd December, 1932. Turepo Prince Domino was born on 28th duly, 1930, and combines some of the best-known strains of the Friesian breed. Ilis sire is Woodlea Prince, a promising young son of Wooderest Hengerveld Mechthilde, from Bainheld Beauty Sylvia 3rd. Wood crest Hengerveld Mechthilde was a grandson of the great American foundation cow, Pietje 22nd, and he was undoubtedly one of the greatest sires ever imported into New Zealand, leaving strong-constitu-tioned, open-framed daughters, three of whom have records of over 7001bs. fat, while he is the grandsire of the “ wonder cow,” Totara C.R. Buttercup. Bainfleld Beauty Sylvia 3rd was not tested herself, but has a full-sister with a record of 526.871b5. fat in 273 days as a 2-year-old. Her sire is Roscvalc King .Sylvia (Netherland King of Rosevale —Burkeyjo 'Sylvia Posch, 9831b5. fa.t), who has seven daughters with records of over SOOlbs. fat, while her dam is Oakwood Beaut}- Spot (Rozincs Butter Boy—'Oakwood Beauty, 5021b5. fat in 315 days) ,who has a failed to qualify record of 658.731 bs. fat as a 4-year-old, and is also a half-sister to Oakwood Rambler, 820.931b5. fat, who in turn is the dam of Oakwood Betty, SlO.lllbs. The dam of the exported bulf-is Tunanui Domino Agnes 4th (Mutual Pearl Piebe—Wooderest Domino), who is perhaps the most outstanding cow in New Zealand to-day for combining type and production. Proof of her producing powers is given by her record of 27,305.1 lbs. milk, 927.'551b5. fat, made under Government C.O.R. test last season, while the excellence of her type is shown by the fact that she was reserve Royal Champion cow in 1930, and champion cow of all dairy breeds at the 1931 Wairarapa show against very strong competition. Mutual Pearl Piebe, the sire of ‘‘Agnes,” was Royal Champion 'bull in 1927, and is out of Mutual Pearl of Rock, 9031b5. fat, while he is also full brother of Pied Rock, a well-known Queensland Royal Champion. Wooderest Domino, the dam of “Agnes,” is sired by the imported American-bred sire, Wooderest Pietje Pontiac, who has two daughters with records of over SOOlbs. fat in New Zealand, while her dam is Domino Btli, whose sire, Allah, was imported from New South Wales. Domino, the dam of Domino Bth, -was one of the original importations of Friesians to New Zealand from Holland.

It will thus be seen that Mr Padgett has selected as his future herd sire a bull of high butter-fat backing, of proven ancestry, and out of a great cow.

It is interesting to know that the foundation cows of Mr Padgett’s herd were daughters of N.Z.-bred Friesians exported to Australia by Messrs G. M. Watt, of Cambridge, J. Donald, of Westmere, and W. I. 'Lovelock, of Palmerston North. Ina of iC'raignell and Queen Curly, two daughters of King Mercena; Tulip Flower, a daughter of Canterbury Statesman; Westmere Pontiac Gem 2nd, a daughter of Wooderest Pietje Pontiac; and Pearl of Friesland Park, a daughter of King of Dominos, were the dams and some of the heifers which Mr (Padgett selected as foundation cows for his “Braemore” stud.
