TENNIS

NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. AVAIRARAPA TOURNEY. A large number of tennis players from North and South Island centres have arrived in Alasterton to take part, in the seventh annual North Island tennis championship series of matches, which commenced in fine but dull weather this morning, under the auspices of the AA’airarapa ILawn Tennis Association, and in conjunction with the Association’s annual championship ana handicap tourney. Entries are good and individual competitors include players in addition to those of AVairarapa clubs, from Auckland, AVellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Taranaki, AVanganui, Hawke’s Bay and Alanawatu districts.

Last night’s rain has freshened up to some slight extent the Alasterton md Afemorial Clubs’ courts, which are being used for tlie tournament. However, although a number of the courts are showing bare patches in places, they are, on the whole, in quite good order for play of championship standard. As in past years, the arrangements made for players and public are excellent. Air H. AI. Boddington, secretary of the AVairarapa Association, assisted by various officials, has charge of the details. His experience, extending over a period of many years, ensures a high degree of efficiency in the conduct of tlie tourney. A great deal of work is entailed both before, during, and even after play, but the enthusiasm and knowledge of the AVairarapa officials is equal to the big task. Alorning and afternoon tea facilities are being provided on each day of the tourney, which will conclude on AVednesday next.

Good progress was made with tlie various sections up to 1 p.m. AVhen play started tlie sky was overcast, but later in the morning there was sunshine.
