YOUTH’S LAPSE

GOLD WATCH STOLEN. “I would be only too- glad to give him a chance, but the report berore me is not too favourable, ; ’ commented Mr J. Miller, S.M., in the Magistrate ’s Court this morning when a plea was made for a period of probation for William Clara, a youth, charged with the theft of a gold watch and a bottle of cordial in Greytown. , It was stated that accused entered the shop of Michael Bouzaid, Greytown, on 3rd January, and on leaving it was discovered that a bottle of cordial had disappeared. The watch was later stolen from the home of ’the Rev. Isaacson, Greytown. Sergeant . Dyer said that accused frequented billiard rooms and dances in Greytown, and lie had been suspected of petty thefts from these places. It was Clark’s first appearance before the Court. Mr C. C. Marsack, who appeared for Clark, said that his client had just turned 17 years of age and his family circumstances had been unfortunate. He asked His Worship to consider granting probation in view of the fact thataccused could be placed on a farm and away from temptation. Accused was remanded to Greytown for sentence. Mr Miller remarked that he would consider granting a, period, of probation under strict conditions if it- could be shown that a suitable place could be- found for accused.
