MASTERTON CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT

The, anmuil report of the Masterton Amo tear Athletic Clu'D, to be presented at the annual ‘meeting, to be held in the Municipgal Buildings on Tuesday evening next, states: ■' Your eonnnittec reports that, in common with other sports, liuanee has suffered somewhat through the economic stringency prevailing. The debit balance was reduced from the 1930-31 season by about £:M. The usual annual sports meeting was held on 22nd Januauy, and from a competitive point it was outstanding, an exceptionally large number .of entries being received from both islands. A. pleasing feature of the meeting was the 'Canterbury Led lege team, esonsis'ting of J.O members, all of whom competed at the sports. The members of this team were met ou arrival in Masterton and wuro entertained and billeted by members of the club committee. We were again fortunate by being favoured with good weather for the sports, the afternoon being beautifully line. There was no evening meeting, a dance being held in the Arcade llall in honour of the visiting athletes. Quite a number of trophies changed hands at the meeting, L. Roberts, of Wellington, winning tho Walker and llb.ll Cup, 11. J. Moms the Gilman Cup, T. McCord tire Boomerang Cup, C. A. “Stowe the Rose Bowl, E. R. Clapp the- Welch Cu.p, C. Jenkins tho Messenger Memorial Shield -and fe. Bye the Williams’ Memorial Shield. Owing to the large number of entries received for the 440 yards Hat handicap it was found necessary t-o run the race intwo sections, the winners being L. Hack (Nifcol Cup) and IM. Crook. Miss M. - Hack was successful in winning both tiro ladies’ -events, 100 yards (Ga-authain Cup) and the 75 yards llat handicap. Congratulations are extended t'o this young competitor on her two wins. Members of tho club were included in the team representing the Wairarapa Sub-Centro 'at the- Wellington Provincial O! camp io n ship s. Although they did not meet with any outstanding success, all the members performed creditably. Owing to the alteration of date the M.A.A.G. was not represented at tire Country Club Championships held at Darrnevirke. During the season a number of our members competed at sports meetings throughout the district -with a fair measure of success. The weekly evening runs were held as usuial at the Park Oval, the average attendance being good. The following members were successful in winning trophies awarded to the various sections; Cycling, 1. McCord; distance events (Hat), L. Hack; sprint events (llat), L. Hack and J. Mu Ivey tied for first place. It | is with deep regret that wo have to I record tho' severe illness of Mr E. j Ward. Mr Ward is well known as ! an energetic and competent club offi--1 cial uucl we extend to liiiu our sinceresympathy ami earnestly hope that he wiJl bo tpuickly rostoied t-o health. During the season wo have as- usual assisted ot'.ier clubs and kindred societies, including the Caledonian Society and t»lre A. mid L > . 80-i:iety ? *iUs-o exmnined the Boy kScouts and Lubs ior t-iie coveted Athletic Badge. We should like it to be generally known that- the officials and memlbcrs of tbo M.A.A.C. are (pule willing to instruct, couch, and advise any young people wuo wish to become athletes, free -of any cost. We believe, .in view of the adverse •comLtioiis ruling, that the forthcoming 'season may be a trying one both to the athlete and the administrator alike. We ask von to give your wlioieheuirted cooperation anil support to- your committee, that it may help them in the tasK that confronts them during the coming season. With the tuient and officers at our disposal there should be no question as to tue issue. We look forward with confidence to the furthcoming season. Remember your club is the premier athletic sports club in the Wairarapa and, try to keep it so. Our grateful thanks are due to the patron, Air Cl. 11. Perry; the president, Mr W. Brady; the vice-presidents, tho lion, medical officers, Drs. N. 11. Prior and Helen Oo'wie; to Messrs W. S. L. Dickson, G. Stl'by and J. Whiteman, starters; Mr W. Grantham, iiandieap-pe-r; Mr A. A.
