TRAMWAY STRIKE
TROUBLE AT CHRISTCHURCH. ATTEMPT TO DERAIL TRAM. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. An attempt to derail the last tram to Riccarton to-night was the only untoAvard event in the running of the service to-day. A large bolt and an iron Avedge Avere placed on the rails in Riccarton Road. The car passed over both obstacles, nariwly escaping derailment, but the motorman AA-as somewhat shaken by his experience. Barbed Avirc fences have been erected across all entrances to the Moorliouse Avenue tramsheds, greatly facilitating tho Avork of the patrols. The Traimvay Board has not yet decided Avhether it Avill extend the service for late shopping night to-morroAA’. Such good progress Avas made to-day by the tramway strike tribunal that there is some prospect of the deliberations being finished to-morrow night. To-day there were no further /.difficulties of procedure, such as Aveife. n ’ countered at the preliminary sitting yesterday, and the hearing of evidence continued from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. The proceedings are in camera. The so-called order of reference to the tribunal comprises, in effect, the submission of the tAvo parties. The board agrees that all questions in dispute betAveen the union and the board be referred to the tribunal, including the position of volunteer Avorkers, and the board’s responsibility to them. The union requests the tribunal to consider the complaint of A’ictimisation aud asks the dismissal of all free labourers, the reinstatement of members of the union in! their former positions, and an equitable system of rationing.—(P.A.)
