MOTOR COLLISION

The three civil actions for damages arising out of a motor car collision on the road between Carterton and Masterton, were continued in the WeHington Supreme Court yesterday before Mr > Justice Blair and a jury. The collision resulted in one person being killed and several injured. _ _ Robert George Coulston is claiming £IBO3 special and general damages from William John Grose. William John Grose, whose wife was fataly injured, is suing Robert Geoige Coulston for £3OOO damages. Thomas Francis Grose, son of William John Grose, is also suing Coulston and another for £IOOO damages. Brian O’Connor, barman at the Taratahi Hotel, Carterton, said that Coulston called at the hotel on the afternoon of the accident and had three drinks in the bar. Coulston that afternoon was absolutely sober, and was in a perfectly fit state to drive a motor car When Coulston left the bar, about 5.15 p.m., lie took a bag containing “square-riggers” of beer with him. Coulston came fairly regularly to the hotel on Saturday afternoons. Thomas Oswald Leach, of Wellington, said he left Masterton at 5.30 on the evening of the accident. When lie came upon the scene of the accident in his motor car he saw .someone lying on the left-hand side of the road near a motor car. Ho inspected the two cars, which had been concerned in the accident. Coulston was reclining against the fence and someone was attending to him. He was asked to drive Coulston home, and did so. He could smell liquor upon Coulston as he was assisting him into the car. After taking Coulston home lie returned to the scene of the accident and directed traffic past the stationary cars for some time. The case will be resumed to-day.
