MUSICAL RECITAL

at SOLWAY COLLEGE. Last night, Mr Gordon Bryan, the noted English pianist, presented at Solway College a feast of music such j as is seldom heard in this part ot the, world. The concert hall was filled and the audience evinced its extreme pleasure by repeated ap-j plausce. Solway College must be «ort-j gratulatcd on its enterprise m the cause of music for having brought such a noted artist within reach of a Mas-•te-rton audience. _ The programme was die ided m o three parts, the first being composed wholly of Old World music, m some instances effectively arranged by modern musicians. The middle group was all description music by present-day composers, and those who were fortunate enough to hear it must agiee * a modern music, can at least be decidedly attractive. The last part of the programme commenced with a Chopin group, followed by a Bussian group and lastly by two magnificent rhapsodies i,y the Hungarian composer, Dohnanyi. Every item was rendered exquisitely. Air Bryan does not indulge in fireworks or flourishes, but uses his flawless technique to the utmost advantage without any apparent effort, m delicate pianissimo passages or in heavy and ponderous chords. The programme was even more interesting than that plaved on his- previous visit. Mr Bryan had to respond to a number of encores, finishing with an attractive Spanish group. He prefaced manv mimbeis with remarks descriptive of the music, v-l'ich added greatly to the interest c the audience.
