COMMUNITY SING
SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. At the community sing last night, there was a large attendance, and the gathering was a most successful one. Mr Wilbur Davies was an excellentleader, and was capably assisted by Mr T. Vaughan at the piano. Selections were played by the Municipal Band under its conductor (Mr R. J. Young), and items were given by Messrs B. Vcnncr, Wilbur Davies, R. J. Young and J. Mulvey, all of which were greatly appreciated, Prior to the sing, the Wnirarapa Pipe Band, under Pipe-Major Murdo McKenzie, rendered several wellplayed selections outside the hall. The collection taken up in aid of the Mayors Unemployment Belief Fund did not come up to expectations, During the evening, Mr Jordan presented the prizes woui \y the pupils of opa kit TO Ore Ore, Masterton West, Central and Solway Schools, in the essav competitions, and the gold medals presented by tlio Wellington Manufacturers’ Association for shop window displays to Mr B. Johnston, W.F.C.A. (“Something to use”), Mr W. B. Teas-da-le, Self-Help (“Something to cat ), and Mr W. W. Hendry, of Hendry and Co. (“Something to wear”). On congratulating the band on its fine performance at the recent contest in Wellington, Mr Jordan said lie was very proud to say that the band had exceeded all expectations. He was sorry that the fact that lie was going congratulate the band that night had been published, as. lie would rather have done it spontaneously. (Hear, hear.) The band had done exceeding y well in all departments. He understood that it was only a matter of_ a toss-up that it was not placed first in the B grade. He had been told in Wellington that the band had played as well in the second as in the first selection. 1 e congratulated the band very heartily on the splendid success achieved. Mr B. J. Young thanked Mr Jordan for his kind remarks. He paid a tribute to the members of the band during their stay in Wellington. All had done their very best, he said, and there had been no slackers. He had got excellent help from members. Mr Jordan then called for three cheers for the band, and these were given heartily. .
