TIN HARE DEALS
CORRUPTION ALLEGED | CHARGES AGAINST MINISTERS. Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, Tuesday. In the Assembly to-day, Mr Stevens, Acting Leader of the Opposition, asked for the appointment of a Royal Commission to enquire into tin hare dealings. He said that he held statutory declarations referring to corrupt bargains and licenses ‘‘which implicate certain members of the Ministry and a high Government official.” Mr Stevens moved that the Commission should consist of a Supreme Court judge and be empowered to enquire into: Firstly, allegations of corruption concerning the parties indicated during the year 1927, and to the present time; and secondly, all circumstances surrounding the issue of licenses and the disposal of shares in greyhound coursing companies. A motion that the matter be dealt with as one of urgency was defeated by 45 votes to 30. Among the documents in the possession of Mr Stevens, whose speech was handed to the Press, was a letter from a firm of chartered accountants containing an offer of 5000 shares in the Australian Coursing Club, Limited, to a certain man “for propaganda” in securing the legislative reintroduction of tin hare racing in New South Wales. Another letter contained an offer of advertising space worth £IOOO to a Labour newspaper for its services to tin hare racing. Other allegations dealt with Judge Swindell’s share in the dealings, and there was also a statement that a certain Minister of the Crown demanded £IOOO cash instead of shares before be would act for the benefit of greyhound racing.
