ANNUAL PICNIC). The Matahiwi School lielcl Us annual picnic and dance on Saturday under ideal conditions. Tlie thanks of the school, committee and residents of the district generally are due to Airs S. E. M. Holmes, who very generously made a donation sufficient to cover all expenses, including the dance and prizes for the children. There was a very large gathering at the picnic. During the morning numerous games were played, and after lunch races were run. The following are the results: —- Standard (5: Daphne Taggart 1, Frank Ellison 2. Std. 4: Harry Ellison 1, Jim Ellison 2. Std. 5: Heather Wilson and David Ellison, dead heat, 1. Std. 1: June Simpson 1, Jack Clarke 2. P. 1: Jan Scott 1, Rex Simpson 2. Single men: S. Amundson J, A- -• Single ladies: Miss Madeley 1, Miss L. Clarke 2. Married ladies: Airs Wilson 1, Airs Holmwood 2. Alarried men: Air Perv 1, Air Scott 2. Sack ' race, seniors:'Frank Ellison 1, Harry Ellison 2; juniors: Jack Ellison .1, lan Scott 2. Hat race: Lois Wilson 1, June Simpson 2. Visiting children: W. Percy 1, J. Percy 2. Red Cross race: Frank Ellison 1, Daphne Taggart 2. Following the gamcsj the prizes were presented to the children, and here opportunity was taken by Air Alaxwcll to express to Airs Holmes the appreciation of all for her generous gift, the large assembly rising and singing, “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Prizes for progress in school work were as follow: Standard 6: Frank Ellison, Daphne Taggart; Std. 4, Harry Ellison, Jim Ellison; Std. 5, David Ellison, Heather Wilson; Std. 1, Jack Clarke; P. 5, June Simpson, Ngairc Clarke; P. 1, Lois Wilson, Doris Amundsen, Rex Simpson. Special prizes for neatness of work during the past year were awarded to: Standard 5: Daphne Taggart; Stds. 2 and 5, Harry Ellison; primary classes, June Simpson. First-class attendance certificates were gained by Frank Ellison, Harry Ellison and David Ellison, and second class by Heather W ilson, Daphne Taggart, Ngaire Clarke, Jack Clarke and Jim Ellison. Afternoon tea was then dispensed. At night the annual dance was held i„ the school, which was taxed to its full capacity, Mr Peters’ orchestra supplying the music. During the the children gave a fined isplay of foK dancing, which was appieciated b\ all. Dancing continued until midnight brought to a close a most enjoyable day.
