SOUTH WAIRARAPA TROTS.

CARTERTON, This Day

The weather is fine but overcast for the South Wairarapa Trotting Club’s meeting. There is a fair attendance. The course is in excellent condition. Results: —-

MARTINBO ROUGH HANDICAP. 2 Goldzone (J. A. Corrigan) 1 :j David McElwyn (L. O. Thomas) - G Bara Gold (J. V. Dykes) 3 Won by two lengths, the third horse three lengths away. Time, 3.26 3-5. TARATAITI HANDICAP.4 Hardy Gratton (V/. Orange) 1 5 Lucky Voyage 2 2 La Campione 2 Won all the way, the third horse half a length away. Also started: 1 Amy Etawali, 3 Aerial Boy. Time, 3.36 3-5. TURF NOTES. Motere, whose most important and last win was recorded in the Auckland Cup of 15 months ago, is being schooled over hurdles at Avondale. He has not been given a thorough try-out yet, but it is probable that he will he raced over sticks in the near future. Unless he overcomes his dislike of wet tracks, Motere would not look like being a. good winter performer.

Eiccarton stables captured eight events at Trentham at tho January meeting, and a strong contingent from there is booked to race at the Welling ton headquarters next week. It comprises Shatter, Taragona, Hilary, Cxaig avon, Moorbird, Cricket Bat, Winsome Hind, Sailor’s Love, Fast Passage, Gay Crest, The Quorn, Tout lo Moud, Jaloi,x, Azalia, Pacify and Grecian Prince.

Although Ladv Linden, winner of the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington, started at a. real outsider’s price, the leading Australian bookmaker showed a loss on the race. The explanation was that (Queensland punters remained loyal to their repreesntative. The Victorians would not have Lady Linden at all, and she was a good winner for the bookmaker on the course, but when he had settled with his Queensland clients he was £3B to the bad. A small loss considering the thousands of pounds he held on the race, but an exasperating result to a bookmaker after a rank outsider has won a big event.

Courtyard, winner of the Kuao Handicap at Napier Park last Saturday, is a two-year-old gelding by Grandcourt from First Below, and is therefore closely related to Second Wind, winner of important races in Australia. Second Wind is by Psychology or Grand court from First Blow. Earlier in the season Courtyard won a juvenile event at the Hawke’s Bay meeting, and he is regarded as a highly promising youngster. Since winning at Napier Park last week, negotiations have been made for the purchase, of Courtyard, and if the sale eventuates ho will probably do Ins future racing in Australia.
