BRITISH FINANCE

REVENUE POURING IN. RUGBY, Tuesday. The remarkable response Avhich income tax payers have made to the request for the prompt payment of the large instalment Avhich became due on January Ist., is shoAvn by Treasury figures, issued to-night, to have been more than maintained in the second Aveelc of the quarter.

During the week ending January 16th the income tax revenue had amounted to £28,500,000, an increase of no less than £18,000,000, or approximately 175 per cent, over the amount collected in the corresponding week last year. The total anfouut collected between January Ist. and January 16th. was nearly £50,000,000, compared with £22,000,000 in the first 17 days of last year. The collection of surtax to date is equally 'satisfactory. During the week ending January 16 £7,350,000 was received, compared with £2,450,000 in the corresponding week of last year, and the total amount received in the first sixteen days of the year is £15,000,000, which shows an increase of £7,000,000 over the total received in the corresponding period of 1931. —(British Official Wireless).
