DUNEDIN DISORDER

LEADERS BEFORE COURT. DUNEDIN, Monday. “There’s no doubt a great many of these people were hungry, but there was no need to resort to this sort of thing,” stated Sub-Inspector Cameron in the Dunedin Police Court when the ease came on just after noon in which the leaders of the unemployed demonstration at Wardell’s grocery store on Saturday week were charged with encouraging disorder and behaving in a disorderly manner. The men charged were Eric Hraithwaite, Francis O’Rorke, Lawrence O’Rorke, George Jones, Norman Lee, William Foote, and William BalJantyne. All pleaded not guilty. The court was crowded, over two hundred being unable to get in. When the case for the prosecution was completed evidence was given by accused, who contended that they were merely acting as representatives of the hungry unemployed, and had at no time attempted to incite the crowd to violence. They maintained, on the contrary, that had it not been for their efforts a much more serious state of affairs might have developed. At (1.30 p.m. the court adjourned till n.a.m. to-morrow.
