In the- report in yesterday’s issue in respect to the hearing of charges against a number of boys in the Children’s Court it was, in error, made to appear that the lad stated to be the ringleader of the boys concerned with theft and mischief was also involved in the charge of assaulting a little girl. The cases were separate ones and had no connection with each other.

The North Island Motor Union in a statement of expenditure by Motor Associations on sign posting for six years from 1926, shows the amount for the period to be £15,756 9s 2d. Auckland headed the fist with an expenditure of £S7OS 11s 6d, and Wairarapa £ll9B 2s 7d. The expenditure on mtor camps for the same period was £S63 9s 6d, Wairarapa expending £394 12s 10d, which was the highest. A number of associations had not done anything in the matter, as local bodies had provided the facilities. When the Manawatu County Council received from the Health Department a bill for proportional payment of the health inspector’s salary and expenses, it was decided to follow the example of the Government and deduct 10 per cent. This action brought a lengthy protest from the department, the Direc-tor-General of Health writing that he regretted to find that the council proposed summarily to retract from its contrast with the department without first learning the other side. The department was unable to make any reduction in its’recoveries at present. The County Council, however, decided to stick to its guns. The North Island Motor Union forwarded a letter from the secretary of the Post Office, to the Wairarapa Automobile Association at its last meeting, in connection with the position of rural mail boxes on roadsides, which stated that the Postal Department could do nothing in the matter. The boxes were erected by owners after consultation with the mail contractor. It was mentioned that this matter came under the jurisdiction of the Transport Board, and the suggestion made that the board be approached in the matter by the North Island Motor Union, asking them to have the regulation enforced. This would mean that cars could only pull up on the correct side of the road.

At a meeting 1 of the executive committee of the "Vv'airarapa Automobile Association at Greytown on Thursday evening, the Mount IloUlsworth Club advised that big improvements had been made to the road leading to the camping ground, by removing the large stones and metalling. Deep ruts had been filled in, the work having been carried out. by the Wairarapa South County Council. During the holidays a large number of motorists had availed themselves of the facilities provided on the camping ground. II was decided to forward to the club . a sketch plan of the conveniences the association considered necessary at the camping ground, asking the club to obtain an estimate of the cost of erection. The association would co-operate in their erection and contribute to the cost.

The number of hotels de-licensed since 1907 throughout Victoria is 1750 and the amount o"f paid £1,117,556. The number of hotels still in existence in Victoria is 1781. The Wairarapa Aero Club’s ’planes Z.K. —A.8.E., piloted by Flying-Officer J. Buckeridge and Z.K. —A.A.M., piloted by Mr. A. B. Jury, will visit Alf redton during the week-end for a flying picnic. Passengers will be taken up for flights. A Sydney message states that the Northcotc Cap third heat was won by the Victorian yacht Toogooloowoo IL, which defeated the defender, lolaire 1. by a minute and 22 seconds. The Toogooloowoo takes the cup, having won three successive heats..

The rebuilding of the Masonic Hotel, facing the Marine Parade, Hastings Street Tennyson Street, and Emerison Street, is announced, states a Press Association message from Napier. The structure will cost £50,000. This is the biggest single building undertaking since the earthquake.

After March 31 next, it will be necessary for all local authorities carrying out work on main highways to obtain the concurrence of the Mam Highways Board before accepting any tender involving the board in any liability in the way of subsidy. The danger of motor vehicles racing on the beach at Paraparaumu was stressed in a letter from the Wellington Automobile Club received at yesterday’s meeting of the Hutt County Council. The club asked the council to cr o into the question with a view Ho making the beach safer from the point of v iew of holiday-makers and bathers.

A Dunedin Press Association message states that after an interval of over six months, during which time the police have been making continuous inquiries, an arrest has been made in connection with tho Ocean Beach freezing Works payroll robbery. Acting on information supplied by the Invercargill Detective Branch, the Dunedin police this afternoon arrested a man at Dunedin. He will be charged there in the morning with theft. A school of about a dozen porpoises which came close inshore at Lyall Bay yesterday morning was mistaken for sharks by some people and many regular bathers were frightened out of taking their usual dip. A resident of tho district, who has bathed in the bay daily for many years, inspected the porpoises through a telescope, and made certain of their identity. He told a reporter later that only once has he known a shark to come into the bay, although the fish have frequently entered the harbour.

After an hour’s heated discussion, a special meeting of the Wanganui Agricultural Association to-day threw out a motion put by the secretary, Mr. F. G-. Seddon, on behalf of Mr. J. Franklin, proposing to cancel the show dates and do away with the autumn show for this year at least. The motion was put on the grounds that tho present financial depression was not the suitable time to bolster up the concern which was losing money, but members pointed out that by cutting expenses severely and with the assured co-opera-tion of the city it was probably that a profit of some £250 would be made.
