Historic Donkey Dies,
Jack, the elder of the two famous donkeys that have trod the Avellhouse Avheel at Carisbrook Castle, Isle of Wight, for more than 20 years, has just died at the age of 26. Dear M.A.T.,— Butting sheep and goats iioav being popular in your column, this may be Avorth a place. The oAvner of a farm betAveen Manukau Harbour and the West Coast gaA e a site for a school, and this Avas fenced off and the school erected. Later the farm .Avas sold and the ucav owner introduced some goats to fight the gorse . and blackberry. Some gumdiggers living near used'the farm as a short cut to the store, and this was turned to good account by an old father goat, locally knoAvn as “Bluebeard.” On the trip to the store Bluebeard Avould let them' pass, but on coming back Avith the pikau of stores, lie Avould give chase, and the rule Avas to throav a loaf of bicad at him, which always secured a free pass. One afternoon Bluebeard wandered to the school, climbed the stay of the straining post, and mounted the steps to the porch. The lady in sole charge made a barricade of forms and desks, but Bluebeard held the school in a state of siege until help arrived. Later Bluebeard developed the Avanderlust and took charge of the road from harbour to coast and by popular vote met an untimely end. —Old-timer.
