CHINESE LIABLE
-FOR LEVY PAYMENTS. WARNING BY DEPARTMENT. “It does not appear to have been a wilful act but has just been overlooked,” remarked Mr J. Miller, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning when two charges of failure to pay unemployment levy installments were preferred against a Chinaman named H. On King. Mr Miller said he took it that the informations were laid as . a warning to the Chinese that they were liable for payments in accordance with the Act as well as Europeans.
Defendant through counsel entered a protest against the charges, making the allegation that he was being penalised. Counsel stated that On Hing had told him the names of other Chinese in the town who had not paid the levy. Defendant had not been aware that he had to make any payments until he received a circular from the Chinese Consul. On receipt of that he had paid the levy.
The Magistrate convicted and discharged defendant on one charge and fined him 10/- with 10/- costs on the other.
