MIRAMAR ROBBERY

HOME RANSACKED. Having broken into the house of Mr H. W- Bateman, 37 Hobart Street, Miramar, yesterday, a thief secured £7, and the contents of a. child’s money box, after ransacking the house. Mrs Bateman left her home about 9.30 a.m. to visit some friends in Kelburn. She locked front and back doors and left a note for a roundsman to leave a certain quantity of vegetables. The note concluded by stating that she would pay him on Saturday. When she returned, about 5.13 p.m., she found that the house had been ransacked, and the contents of every drawer in the house examined. Every room in the house had been visited by the thief, who, it appears, conducted his search for booty in quite a leisurely manner. So far as Mr and Mrs Batemaiwmn ascertain, his only reward was £7 in notes, and the contents of the child s money box. which had been battered open for the pennies which it contained. The notes were in a wardrobe, which was locked, and the key had been wrapped up in paper, and placed m _ :l drawer. The thief found this, and discovering that it fitted the lock of the wardrobe, opened it, and thus secured the major part of his haul. It is assumed that the thief visited the house, read the note on the doorstep, and then made his entrance through a leadlight which had been left partly open.
