SHOW SHEEP
UNFAIRLY SHORN. CONCERN AT PRACTICE. A letter was received at a meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association yesterday afternoon from the Council of the Corriedale Sheep Society stating that the practice of unfair shearing of show sheep was viewed with much concern by the Society. This had been particularly noticeable among the sheep exhibited at the recent Royal Show hold at Christchurch. It was intended, stated the letter, to take steps to curb the increasing practice. Towards this end it was decided to communicate with A. and P. associations throughout the Dominion requesting the executive to specifically instruct judges of Corriedale classes to throw out all sheep which, in their opinion, were unfairly shorn or excessively trimmed.
The hope had been expressed that the Masterton association would support the society in the matter and it was felt that this practice was beeom ing all too common. Adequate instructions, it was considered, should be given to the judges so that a fairer exhibit of sheep might be put before the public.
The' president, Mr J. M. James, observed that the conditions set down in the Royal Society’s schedule stipulated a date by which the sheep should be shorn. He was certain that the association would favour a specific date for the shearing of the sheep. He took it that judges, when making awards, would take into consideration, any unfair shearing. He was in sympathy with the view expressed by the Corriedalo Society. Mr A. McKay did not think the question of a fixed shearing date came into the matter at all. It was the practice of unfair shearing, he considered, that the society was complaining about.
Other members concurred with this view and on the motion of the president. it was decided to advise the Corriedale Society that the association was in sympathy with it and would act in accordance with its request.
