A frost of 14.4 degrees was registered in Masterton this morning. A broadcast report from Melbourne states that a medical review of the cancer position in Australia shows that one in every ten persons is doomed to die of that disease, and in the Commonwealth to-day, more than 500,000 people now alive will die of cancer. At Homebush, Victoria, four Communists, after attempting to give public addresses, were chased wildly through the streets by about 1000 children, states a wireless message. After an arduous run they escaped. One of the Communists was a girl of sixteen. A dance will be held in the Masonic Hall to-night. Patrons are assured of an enjoyable time, as the music will be supplied by Kirk’s Orchestra, which is noted for its high standard of playing. Supper will be provided, and the charges for admission are fixed at a low figure. Among 127 students of Auckland University who received degrees yesterday was Mr J. D. Maguire, a blind graduate, who received a degree in law. He gained his matriculation at the Blind Institute and then went to the University. He is the first blind student to gain a degree in law. Next Wednesday evening the churches of Masterton, under the auspices of the Masterton Ministers’ Association, will combine in a United Intercession 'Service at Knox Church in the interests of the Bible-in-schools. Rev. J. Davie, President of the Ministers’ Association, will preside, and Rev. Canon Percival James of Wellington will give an address. The results of the theory examinations held last June under the Associated Board R.A.M. and R.C.M., London, are as follow:—Harmony, Higher Division, Isabel Pettit, Solway College —Distinction; Winifred Dyer, pass. Rudiments: Devora Kissin, Solway College; Audrey Whitelaw, Solway College. 'Grammar of Music, Division II.: —Patricia O’Neale, Laura Pillar.

A Napier telegram states that Leo Sylvester Hannan, for breaking and entering at Waipukurau, was sentenced to eighteen months’ hard labour by Mr Justice Reid at Napier to-day. A fish caught at Greymouth, and said by local fishermen to be a frost fish, weighed between 110 and 1201 b., so that it can be safely classed as larger even than the biggest frost fish that ever got away.. E. Bid will) in his address congratulated the club in coming through the vear so very favourably considering the state of the times. The balance-sheet showed a loss of £l-520, which included 111334 0s 3d written off for depreciation, which was a liberal estimate. He further stated that the Club was second to none in the whole of New Zealand as far as conveniences were concerned. As an. owner of horses he said he knew 'wliat tiie cost of training a horse amounted to, and would like to see something done for owners by way of reducing nomination, acceptance and travelling fees, as after all it was the horse owner that kept racing going. Speaking on the amalgamation of clubs the president said that a good many of the small clubs who were in financial difficulties would be well advised to join in with other larger clubs and thus make a good club instead of being as at present. The good roads and motor transport had made a very big difference.

Much was heard to-day of the cost of education —there was need for reducing administrative costs and doing away with duplication and overlapping —but if we had educated before the war as we educated -for waging it, there might never have been a war, said Mrs Barrer in her address at the Masterton Women Teachers’ Association last night. Education of the right kind, education of all the faculties and in the co-operative spirit, could never ■he discussed in terms of money. As one authority said: “It is possible to discuss it in terms of lessened crime, military efficiency, economic expansion, equality of opportunity, scientific invention, civil peace, social contentment.” “Thousands a- year,” .said Graham Wallace, in “Our Social Heritage,” “could not yield the unique and irreplaceable satisfaction which comes to an individual whose working hours are passed in doing that for which lie is best equipped by nature and training. . ..An almost unimaginable increase of human happiness, social contentment and economic efficiency ..would, result. ”
