FATAL FIRE.
OLD MAN’S DEATH. (By Telegraph—Press Association). PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of William Mitchell, wl.o lost his life when fire occurred at his residence in the early hours of Sunday morning. Nu/rse Fraser stated she was employed by deceased to nurse his daughter. Shortly after midnight witness, found that the house was on fire and awakened the others. All got out safely. Later deceased returned to the house for soipe purpose. Constable Grant stated that deceased was found in a sitting position in the bedroom of his invalid daughter. Dr. Putnam said that the deceased .had been suffering from heart trouble. Leputy-Superintendent Milverton, of the Fire Brigade, went inside the building at the risk of his-' life in an endeavour to get deceased out. The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, that death was due to suffocation and burning. He added that he was satisfied that every effort was made by the brigade to rescue deceased.
