THEFT.

CIVIL SERVANT’S LAPSE. (By Telegraph —Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. Employed in a responsible position in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, Vincent Cranfield Butcher, a clerk, aged 29, abused his trust and helped himself to money out of a strongroom. He was charged to-day with the theft of £lO3, the property of the Government. He pleaded guilty and Avas committed for sentence to the Supreme Court. It was stated in evidence that it Avas the accused’s duty to look after the strong-room door, and he had a key for this purpose. The money was abstracted from cash boxes. Accused Avas brought to Wellington, under escort, from Auckland, Avliere he Ayas arrested on the wharf, prior to embarking on the Ulimaroa for Sydney, under the name of Cranfield.
