MASTERTON RACES
SPRING MEETING. WET WEATHER PREVAILS. The Masterton Racing Club’s spring meeting is being held at Opaki to-day. Rain set in early in the morning, with the result that a track which was in tip-top* order yesterday is now on the soft side. However, by the time the second race came up for decision the sun was shining and conditions were good. There is a fairly good attendance. About 1.20 o’clock Admiral Kayseir and 15 officers of the Dutch fleet arrived on the course, and were welcomed by Mr C. F. Vallanee. * Tho details of the results up to the time of going to Press are as follow: — NURSERY HANDICAP, 4 furlongs. 2 W. H. Gaisford’s Esteem, 8.0 (H. Gray) 1 1 C. T. Keeble’s Golden Wings, 8.5 (Wiggins) 2 5 Mr W. G. New’s Haulbowline, 8.0 (J. Barry) 3 Also started: 4 Capo Gold, 4 Maritime, 4 Movietone, 1 Red Rufus, 8 Cottesmore, 6 Acis, 11 Califont, 9 All Humbug, 10 Lucky Moment, 3 Richborough, 7 Jean Ladosio, 12 Moa Queen, 6 Invite.
Esteem came through in great style and won by a length, with the third horse half a length away. Cape Gold was fourth. Time, 50 2-ssecs. MAIDEN STAKES, 6 furlongs. 3 11. P. F. Blundell’s Tobacco Land, S.B (Wiggins) 1 8 E. and A. Foreman’s Spearful, S.S (Gerrand) 2 4 O. S. Watkins’ Mythology, 8.8 (J. Barry) 3 Also started: 10 Masterton, 12 General Assembly, 7 Intruder, 7 Zephyrus, 11 Magic Land, 8 Saltpot, 6 Braggart, 2 Half Acre, 15 Gold Sand, 5 Star of Gold, 1 Jayson, 13 Ramanu, 14 Lady Ronald, 9 King Hal. Tho favourite, Jayson (H. Gray), was left at the post and did not take part in the race. Tobacco Land, running a splendid race, got into the lead early, and, showing a good turn of speed, won comfortably by two lengths, with the third horse four lengths away. Gold Sand was fourth. Time, 1.18. The start of the race was delayed by Jayson, who refused to face the hairier, and consequently did not start. HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, 1 mile. 1 H. J. Palmer’s Playground, 9.7 (M. Nichols) ■*- 5 W. R. Kemball’s Miss Hastings, 9.0 (G. Ridgway) 2 2 A. A. Cameron’s Spearopa 9.0 (A. McDonald) 3 Also started: 2 Rameses (Delieu), 6 Doe (Tinsley), 4 Burnt Note (Gunn). Rameses came away at the start, with Playground next. Rameses led into the 'straight, with Spearopa close handy. Coming away ip. great style, Playground cut down the field and won easily by several lengths, with Spearopa half a length away. Rameses was fourth. Time, 1.45 1-5.
