Major-General Sir Andrew Russell will be a visitor to the Wairarapa for the ex-service men’s re-union at Carterton on Saturday next.
A cable from London reports the doath of the Right Rev. Frederick Wallis, formerly Bishop of Wellington, at the ago of 75 years.
A London cable states that it is understood that Sir Alexander Godley will succeed General Sir Charles Monro as Governor of Gibraltar in September.
A very early-settlor, Mr W. A. Donald, of Underhill Road, Featherston, died yesterday at Dr. Sharpe’s Private Hospital, at tho age of 73 years. The late Mr Donald was a prominent horse-owner in his day and bred a number of good performers. His most notable racehorse was Aboriginal, which won the Winter Cup at Riccarton some years ago, besides other good races.
The death occurred at Hastings on Saturday night of Mr Garratt, formerly a well-known resident of the Masterton district, at the age of 77 years. Deceased was employed for many years on Brancepeth station and, took up his residence in Hastings about 20 years ago. Mrs Garratt predeceased him last September. He leaves four sons (Messrs W, H. and G. R. Garratt, of Masterton, and J. and F. Garratt, of Hastings) and two daughters (Mesdames F. Grubb, of Christchurch, and J. Tommbs, of Auckland), besides 16 grandchildren and 4 great' grandchildren.
