THE BOLTON DIVORCE.
GUILTY OFADULTERY. RESPONDENT’S EVIDENCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Tuesday. After an hour’s retirement, the jury empanelled to hear the petition of Felix Stuart Hiiulmarsh Bolton, farmer, of Pahiatua, for divorce from Eileen Afargarct Bolton returned with a verdict 'that respondent was guilty of adultery. Asked to decide whether petitioner had connived at his wife’s misconduct, the jury returned a negative answer, but considered that his careless and neglectful conduct may have contributed to the same. The hearing of Airs Bolton’s "sid\_pf the case occupied all day. told the court that her husband had paid her little attention since their marriage. He knew of her meetings with Hewitt, and never disapproved. Hewitt used % to ring her up twice a week and her husband used to ring Hewitt’s house for her, so that Mrs Hewitt would not know about it. When at Hastings she rang up her husband for more money, but he told her to borrow from Hewitt, who later sent her a photograph of himself which she displayed in her bedroom. Petitioner saw it there, but never objected. Air Treadwell objected to Mr Ongley asking respondent if it were true that she admitted to Airs Eilers that she was in a certain condition to Hewitt. Ills Honor upheld the objection. Counsel: ‘‘ When you wrote to Airs Eilers, you called Hewitt ‘Jack,’ but when you wrote to Airs Bolton, senior, you called him a coward and a rotter ? What happened to cause you to alter your opinion of Hewift?” Witness g"! would rather not say.” Witness remained mute to counsel’s repeated request for an answer to this question. Thelma Lowry recalled seeing H<JH itt’s photograph in Airs Bolton’s bedroom, and said she knew of the meetings between the parties. Airs Shutc, respondent ! s mother, stated that she complained to petitioner about the way lie let his wife go out at night, but he seemed to think she would be all right. Hewitt, in the box, assured the jury that Bolton knew of his meetings with Airs Bolton. DEGREE NISI GRANTED. PA LAPER ST ON X., This Day. Ilis Honour. Judge Ostler, granted a decree nisi, saying that he was satisfied that the verdict of the jury meant that there had been adultery and no connivance. Application was made by petitioner’s counsel for costs against Hewitt. On this question Ilis Honour reserved his decision. Leave was granted counsel spondent up to January 20 to ask Tor a new trial.
