The Governor-General, accompanied by Her Excellency Lady Alice Fcrgusson, left Wellington last evening by the Tutanekai for a short visit to Pelorus Sound. Their Excellencies will return to Wellington immediately before Christmas. Dowager Countess of Onslow is seriously ill. Her son, the Earl of Onslow, has been obliged to cancel his immediate engagements, owing to ttic illness of the Countess. His mother is at the residence of her-daughter, the Countess of Iveagh, at Pyrford Court, Woking. The death has occurred in London, a Press Association cablegram reports, of Commissioner Elijah Cadmau, the first Salvation Army captain, whose adoption of a title led to the system of ranks within the army. Mr H. J. Francis, District Manager of the A.M.P. .Society, leaves Masterton to-morrow on extended holiday leave during which time Mr and Mrs Francis, with their daughter, Miss Francis, will visit Europe. The engagement is announced of Miss Erina Renall, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs 11. R. Renall, Ivokotau, to Mr George Roland Grimmer, youngest son of Mr and Airs G. H. Grimmer, of Carterton.

Air B. L. Larson, who has occupied the position of acting-overseer to the Alastcrton County Council for the past few months, has been appointed as from December 1, overseer to the council.

The death was reported at Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay, yesterday, as the result of an accident, of Air Leonard Ilannam, a brother of Airs Robert Sutherland, of Third Street, Lansdowne. Air Hannam’s mother resides in Featherston.

Williams) will leave Wellington on Friday for Nerv Plymouth to open the Alokau bridge on Saturday. The Prime Alinister will proceed thence to Te Ivuiti, en route to Auckland, where he will arrive on Saturday night. Air Coates will meet Air L. S. Amery on the latter’s return from Rotorua, and, after fare-welling the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, will leave for Wellington on Tuesday night. The Right Rev. Dr. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, wlio fainted while opening a garden party at the Alater Aliscricordiac Hospital, Auckland, on Saturday, was successfully operated upon yesterday morning at that institution by Dr. Casement Aitken, Dr. Cleary was under- treatment at the hospital, and left his bed to open the garden party, but it proved too much for his physical strength. His condition was considered so serious that prayers were offered in the Catholic Churches on Sunday. "Upon inquiry at tho hospital yesterday it was learned that the operation had proved quite successful. After a meeting of the Executive Council held at Parliament Buildings yesterday, reports a Press Association message, Ilis Excellency the GovernorGeneral (Sir Charles Fergusson), in the presence of Alinisters of the Crown, members of tlie Railways Board, representatives of the branches of ttic Department and others, presented to Air F. W. Jones, A1.Y.0., chairman of the Railways Board, the badge of the Companion of the Imperial Service Order, together with His Alajestv’s warrant conferring upon him that dignity. The Right lion. L. S. Amery was accorded a civic reception at a large and enthusiastic gathering of Nelson citizens yesterday afternoon, the Mayor (AH W. J. Atoffatt) and Air H. Aimore, ALP., giving addresses of welcome. Later Air Amery opened the biological control station at the Cawthron Institute of Scientific Research, inaugurated under the Empire Alarketing Board scheme. Air Amery then visited Nelson College to present the Riddiford Cup (awarded to the best secondary school cadet corps in New Zealand). He said their keenness in winning the cup again and again would be reflected in all their activities. Last evening Air Amery was the guest at a complimentary dinner given by Air 11. It. Duncan, chairman of the Cawthron Trust Board. Air Amery left for Wellington last .tight, where, lie arrived to-day. He will spend two days there before proceeding north, and has a full programme. He was entertained at luncheon by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Manufacturers’ Association, and the Wellington Employers’ Association.
