MOTOR FATALITY.
CAB GOES OVER BANK. -GLADSTONE RESIDENT DROWNED The Pakuratahi bridge, which is about two miles on the Wairarapa side of Kaitoke, on the Wellington-Wairarapa road, was the scene of a motor ear accident about six o’clodriast night. Mr Herbert Edwards, with two companions, Mr Hugh Minchin, and Mr Keye, left Upper Hutt for Masterton, Mr Edwards driving. When approaching the Pakuratahi bridge, the car was driven down the old road to where the old bridge used to be, and went over a 'bank about 15 Feet high. The car fell into the stream, and all three men were underneath, but -Mr. Minchin and Mr Keye •crawled out and ran to a nearby house for help. The help of the men from the Public Works camp was also obtained, but when Mr Edwards was extricated he was found to have been -drowned.
Dr. Kemp, of Upper Hutt, was summoned, but was unable to do anything for the victim of the accident. The other occupants of the car were not seriously injured. Some months ago' a new concrete bridge was built abdlit half a chain downstream from the old bridge, which it replaced and which was taken away. The night was dark and rainy, and this, with the fact that Mr Edwards may have been in the habit of using the old road, probably contributed towards the accident.
Mr Edwards was well known in Gladstone, where he managed a farm. It is stated that he leaves a widow and two children. The body was taken to Upper Hutt.
