TO THE NORTH POLE.
AMUNDSEN IN THE ICE.
GLIMPSE OF SPXtZBERGEN.
LONDON, Tuesday.
Captain Ronald Amundsen, in a radio from Xing’s Bay, Spitsbergen, states that the Fram reached the edge of the ice at Xing’s Bay at 2-ti.hu on Monday, after a satisfactory crossing, despite snow and fog, on Sunday morning, and scattered drift ice, which compelled the Fram to proceed slowly. Small spurts of fog made it difficult to determine the ship’s position, but suddenly the mists parted on Sunday night and the captain caught a glimpse of the northern point, Prince Xarl Foreland. The ship is now proceeding at full speed up the fiord. During thet'/Frata lost connection with the Hobby, which was outpaced but is expected in Xing’s Bay in 24 hours. The weather forecasts have held good and the meteorological service on the Fram is functioning satisfactorily, and will be still better when American reports are received after April 15th. “We are in excellent spirits,” adds Captain Amundsen. —Aus. and N.Z.
