TURF TOPICS.
The hundred guineas Awapuni Gold Cup, which, with 420 gold sovereigns in specie, will be competed for in the premier classic event of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting, a splendid specimen of the jeweller s art. The gold portion of the trophy stands 7j inches high, and over all, with the stand 9 1-10 inches. It is of 18-earat solid gold, and was manufactured in the Dominion.
The Gold Cup at Trentham on Saturday proved to be the good thing for Pilliewinkie that the machine indicated. He went to the front at the start and led on to the course proper from Red Wink, and passing the stand the order was Pilliewinkie, Red Wink, Quiescent, Tresham, Suggestion,. Surveyor. There was little change in the order on the way round, and, coming into the straight full of running, Pilliewinkie went on to win easily by three lengths from Quiescent, who beat Suggestion by a neck. Tresham was fourth, Red Wink fifth, and Surveyor, who failed to stick to liis task in the run up the straight, was last.
The Pacific Handicap at Trentham on Saturday saw two two-year-olds under silk again, and the result was a victory for Mandane, who stuck to her task well and won in the last couple of strides from the Trentham filly Black Cat. Mimetic was at the head of affairs when the field, well bunched, swept on to the course proper, but at the distance Lipin ins had taken charge and as he showed no signs of weakening he looked a winner half a furlong from homo. Here, however, Black Cat challenged and then Mandane came on the scene. A great finish ensued, in which Mandane won by a head from Black Cat, with Lucinius another head away third. Shirley was a good fourth, and then came Mimetic, King’s Speech and Star Area.
Several horses were yell backed in the Autumn Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, and Spoony wound up a better favourite than The Banker and Far North. -A good start was effected, and passing the stand Clarinda led from Mountain Lion, Far North and Spoony, with Stream last. Mountain Lion was in charge at the mile post, with Far North right up with him, Clarinda next, and then Spoony, Shining Armour and The Banker, while Stream was still well in the rear. Six furlongs from home Mountain Lion was in charge, from Far North, while Spoony, Clarinda and The Banker were handy. Far North led into the straight from Clarinda. Clarinda took charge two furlongs from home, and below the distance was challenged by The .Banker. In a hard finish The Banker prevailed by a neck. Bonetter was a fair third, Spoony fourth and the next to finish were Far North and Shining Armour. Mountain Lion was last.
