DRAMATIC ARREST.
FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE,
LONDON, Saturday
A dramatic arrest occurred outside the London Bankruptcy,. Court. Charles Alfred Gardiner, formerly managing director of the Gardiner Shipbuilding and Engineering Company of Poole, Dorset, at a salary of £IO,OOO a year, was arrested aboard a yacht at Southampton by order of the High Court for failing to appear a year ago for public examination as a director of the company above mentioned, which failed with a deficiency of £214,000. Ho was lodged in the Brixton prison for a month and brought to the Bankruptcy Court on Friday and examined, after which the registrar granted his release. Gardiner shook hands with the warders and thanked them for their kindness.
No sooner was he outside the court than ho was re-arrested by Scotland Yard detectives on a charge of obtaining a cheque for £200,000 on false pretences. lie appeared in the Bow. Street Court, and was remanded. He stated that he had a complete answer to the charge.—Aus, and N.Z. Cable Assn.
