The two-year-old colt Heroic, which Avon the Breeders’ Plate at the Austra- ! lian Jockey Club ’.s meeting on Monday, i was one of the highest priced year- ! lings sold in Sydney last Easter, when 'h e realised 1800 guineas. He carries the same colours as Purser, a good handicap and weight-for-age performer, and is an inmate of C. T. Godby’s sta- ■ ble, one of the big betting stables of Melbourne. Heroic ? s sire, Valais, by ( Cicero, had some two-year-old winners ’as a result of one season at the stud in England. His yearlings attracted great attention in Australia last auti umn on account of their good looks and racy appearance, and a big stud career was then predicted for him.
The Metropolitan winner, Sir Andrew ,was a little disappointing in the early part of last season, and he failed to get any nearer than sixth in the A.J.C. Derby. It was not until the autumn that h e really showed his . best form, his second to Prince Cox an the Australian Cup (2i miles) showing that he was possessed of stamina. He scored his only success of the season at Randwick, in the A.J.C. St. Leger, when he easily defeated. the odds-on favourite Caserta. The triumph, of Sir Andrew yesterday, together with his two best races last season, go some way towards refuting the idea that the Traquair horse, Woorak, is a sire only of sprinters. He avas himself a brilliant horse, noted for speed rather than stamina, and while it must be admitted that most of his stock to date have been .sprinters rattier than stayeTs, Sir Andrew is at least one exception to the rule Sir Andrew has not been raced a great deal, if at all. this spring, but he must have satisfied his connections that he was a decided Metropolitan possibility, for ten days 'ago all money available about him was accepted, and at satisfactory prices.
