COAL TROUBLE.
PROSPECTS OF SETTLEMENT.
There is said to be some hope of a settlement of the mining dispute on tha West Coast this week, especially as Mr P. O’Rourke, secretary of the Miners* Association,, is prolonging his stay in Westland, and there appears te be warrant for the assumption that overtures have been made by the Miners’ Federation to the employers for a settlement. On the other hand it is well known that one condition precedent to any discussion of the position by the AlmaOwners’ Association is that the men. must first resume work under the Ar-., ~ bitration award, and there is no indi- , cation of this being done. The meagre assistance offered to tha , , miners will not-relieve one-tenth of tha necessities of them and their relatives, and a 'special meeting was to have been , held yesterday by th e State Miners*" Union on the request of 47 members ta object to a levy by the Rewanui see-KM tion of the union of 10 per cent on ~ miners’ wages. ' • Considerable comment has been made on the action of the Blackball Co-oper- j ative Mine Owners in raising the priea of coal 4s per ton because of the stoppage of other mines. V
