ARREST IN MASTERTON.
REPATRIATION OFFICIAL,
CHARGED WITH FORGERY. Following upon investigations made by Inspector Innes, of the Audit Department, Thomas Richard Southall, secretary of the Masterton Racing Club, and formerly secretary of the Masterton branch of the Repatriation Department, was arrested, .yesterday afternoon by Detective Nutt-all, of Wellington, and charged that he did on March 27th, 1922, at Masterton, forge the name of W. R. Walker to a Treasury voucher for £SO, with intent to defraud.
Defendant appeared at the Masterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon before Mr. S. L. P. Free, S.M. Mr D. K. Logan appeared for accused Sergt. Sweeney stated that investigations were incomplete, and as further charges would be preferred he asked for a remand till July 17th. He also asked for substantial bail.
The remand was allowed, and bail, which was forthcoming, was fixed at self £2OO and two sureties of £IOO. _ Detective Nuttall and the auditor are now continuing the examination of the books.
