In their reply to the Turkish coun-ter-proposals the Allies express surprise that Ismet Pasha should have reopened various questions he iceepted as settled at Lausanne and should have raised several entirely new poi) ts. Nevertheless, is an earnest desire to expedite the conclusion of a just and lasting peace, the Allies are ready to discuss Tukey’s counter-pr]j.n;a.'s on the distinct understanding that the economic clauses shall aim be reopened and reconsidered. —Aus. anl N Z. Cable Assn. SERIOUS FIRES. (Received Tuesday, 11.30 a.m.) ATHENS, Sunday. A fire destroyed the kitchens and distributing stations established for ten thousand refugees from Anatolia. Volunteer firemen saved the doctors and nurses. Greek, troops are assisting in the rebuilding of the premises. A Tiflis message states that a fire destroyed one of the immense warehouses of the Near East relief organisation at Alexandropol, where sixteen thousand Armenian children are housed, this being the largest orphanage in the world. Several orphanage buildings were endangered, but a bucket brigade of two thousand children was organised by an American nurse and kept back the flames, assisted by a battalion of Bolshevik soldiers. —Aus. and N.Z.
