COST OF EDUCATION.
ENORMOUS INCREASE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Speaking at the opening of the new school at Prebbleton, the Minister of Defence (Sir Heaton Rhodes) said that the delay in getting the money for the school was not due to any fault of the Minister of Education (Air Parr). Finance was the trouble, and it was a condition of the times. At every Cabinet meeting the Minister presented demands for new schools. Since the war there had been more demands, as the war had left a leeway of 700 schools to bo made up. Mr Parr’s difficulty was in finding the money for new .schools. The cost of education was increasing, as he showed by the following figures:— Cost
That was apart from the cost of buildings, Sir Heaton Rhodes explained. The cost of buildings had increased, and the cost of education, including buildings was 55s 3d a head of the population. The cost of education all ever .the world was increasing as the result of new methods.
The Minister said that he was not in favour of free university education for all. It should be given only to those who were likely to profit by it, and mot to all and sundry. He would like to see .all children win their way by scholarships to university education.
