DE VALERA.
De Valera first attempted to pose as a hero in connection with the trouble in Ireland. This proving a ludicrous failure, he next tried his. hand as a martyr. He joined the rebels and urged them on to their death while apparently ne himself sought a safe hiding place. He has no doubt been daily waiting for the Free State troops to arrest him and march him along the streets, where he hoped that the populace would come in their thousands to see “Do Valera, the patriot and martyr.” But the Free State Government do not intend to glorify this adventurer. His small faction has endeavoured to convey the impression that the Government has been feverishly hunting for De Valera, but the Government has not been wasting its time in this direction. It is announced by the Free State authorities that , the Government is not troubling much about De Valera, as it is believed that he counts for little, and therefore it would be folly to make a martyr of him.
