Wairarapa Daily Times [Established 47 Years.] THURSDAY, JULY 13, 1922. ADDRESS-IN-REPLY.
The Address-in-Reply debate is dragging its weary way through the House of Representatives. It is not producing anything likely to benefit the people of the country generally, but it is giving members the usual opportunity to do some electioneering. Most of the speeches in the House have been delivered by members who have had one eye continually on the electors of their own particular constituency. The address-in-reply is so much waste time, and.the same may be said of the amendments thereto. W ; th its strong majority in the House, Cabinet can sit back and view the proceedings with a feeling ci ! calmness and satisfaction —satisfaction because ther e is no element in the Opposition likely to cause the Government to give up the reins of power at the next election. The Government may have a smaller majority on the occasion of the opening of the next session of Parliament, and this will be :n the country’s interests, because b'g majorities do' not tend to produce ■‘Ye best legislation. The “hot air” that is in evidence in the House just now will not cause the Prime Minister much loss of sleep.
