RETRENCHMENT.

REDUCED DEFENCE STAFF. It was recently stated that, in view of the attitude adopted by Parliament, further retrenchment in the Defence Department was inevitable. The scheme has apparently been decided on, for some 27 officers and 70 non-commissioned officers have received notification of the termination of their engagements. The list has not yet been published but it is understod that, with the exception of three or four, the officers affected are of the rank of captain and below.
